The exhibition Rose Garden brings together works by Šejla Kamerić in which the artist explores issues of feminism, gender stereotypes, and the models and meanings of self-portraits. Her iconic works Behind the Scenes (2018) and the series Mother Is a Bitch (2022) will be presented alongside the series Hooked (2010–2022) and the most recent piece Rose Garden (2022). These works, examining the place and role of women in the contemporary world, aggregating historical experiences of expressing female identity within society, will be displayed in the space of the Rajhl Palace, a Secessionist building from 1904 that houses the Contemporary Art Gallery Subotica. The ambiance of the Gallery, still bearing traces of a family home, will bring these themes to the audience in an environment that invites reflection, understanding, and empathy.
Using art as a means of self-identification, Šejla Kamerić explores the traces that society imprints on individuals. Through her work, she persists in the processes of deconstructing narratives and assumptions that shape certain identities, aiming to contribute to understanding and encourage detachment from negative practices of stigmatization and exclusion of specific social communities. A significant aspect of her work involves investigating the influence of societies, both contemporary and historical, on the formation (or abolition) of women’s freedom and the shaping of women according to society’s standards.
Opening on November 10th at 7pm, at the Contemporary Gallery of Art in Subotica, the show will go through January 10th of 2024. The exhibition is curated by Nela Tonković, and supported by Eugster || Belgrade, Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Serbia, City of Subotica and North Engineering d.o.o.
