:mentalKLINIK are featured in the new Michael Petry’s volume MIRRORMIRROR – The reflective surface in contemporary art published by Thames&Hudson.
From the art of Cindy Sherman to Anish Kapoor, from Yayo Kusama to Tracey Emin, MirrorMirror presents an intriguing and gloriously illustrated global survey of ‘reflective’ work by MORE THAN 150 artists across media, nationalities, genders, and locations. The extraordinary range of works featured in MirrorMirror invite us to ponder and reflect upon the nature of reality and our place within the world.
Special consideration is given to selfies and the way in which the mobile phone now operates as a modern-day mirror to the self. In all these works, the concept of reflection, the notion of creating an alternative space or of opening up space within the frame of the viewer’s interaction with the artwork, have a root in the past.
This multitude of artworks in MirrorMirror – from monumental installations to the slightest selfie, capture how mirrors appeal to more than just human vanity but are objects of magic, transformation, and power.

:mentalKLINIK are an Istanbul-born, Brussels-based artist duo who have worked together since 1998. Their work often appears luxe as well as disposable, and can take the form of sculpture, installation and video. They play with seduction and the boundaries of truth and fiction. For their series Profile Vienna Is, large mirrors had various descriptions of Vienna across their surface. VIENNA IS A SNOWFLAKE A RARE SPECIES NOT A STEREOTYPE NOT FAKE WEIRD WEIRD IS GOOD was set against a yellow solar mirror ground, while neon pink was the backdrop to VIENNA IS A GENDERQUEER WITH AMAZING BRIGHT BLUE EYES AND PERFECT WHITE TEETH SMART AND WITTY NEVER GAIN WEIGHT A MEGA SOCIAL BUTTERFLY.
In their Profile series of mirrors each solar mirror was given a person’s name and offered a description of that person (EMMA: JEZEBEL, ELOPER, TOLERANT, FLORAL, EVANGELIST, BITCHY, SWALLOWER), in a comment on today’s ubiquitous social media profiles and identities.
